17 – A family at the seaside in summer caught in the rain – not the sort of weather they were hoping for on their holiday!

For me, the expression on the man’s face is priceless, and the solitary carousel in the background reeks of the kind of bleak loneliness that a lot of smaller English coastal resorts represent in all but the fiercest summer sun.
This looks more like a school outing than a family holiday though – why would the child in the middle have a ’sporty’ non-hooded jacket and the others dayglo pacamacs if they all belonged to the same family? Clearly the man has been coerced into the whole charade – note the tense, clasped hands behind the back – and has no fondness for children at all, as most old-fashioned teachers in the 70’s didn’t.
